Preparing For the Wedding – The Responsibilities of the Bride and Groom

Preparing for your wedding day takes a lot of work and the cooperation of the bride and groom.  Together they need to work out all of the details of the wedding from the date to the honeymoon destination to the colour scheme.  Here we take a look at the responsibilities of the bride and groom and what they need to handle together in order to make their wedding day one to remember.

Together

The first thing the bride and groom need to do as a couple is determine the date of the wedding.  The date of the wedding will impact the budget, how the wedding will be paid for and if they will be able to get their parents to help them.  Once the date is set you can then discuss where you want to get married and where to hold the reception.  If the hall you choose is open, you can reserve it with a small deposit.  Depending on where you are getting married, you may be required to attend premarital counselling.   Obtain any medical tests that may be required for the wedding as well as your marriage license and choose your wedding invitations.

Once you have decided on a date for the wedding, you will need to determine who will be part of the wedding party.  It’s a good idea to work this out early in the event someone you want for the wedding cannot make it.  It’s also a good way to determine which groomsman and bridesmaid will walk down the aisle together at the end of the wedding.  You definitely want to pair up people who will get along well or couples who are together.  Once the wedding party has been decided, the bride and groom should choose small tokens of their affection to give to them at the rehearsal dinner.  A small gift for the parents of the bride and groom should also be decided on.

The Bride

The bride is usually the one who has to worry about paying for the wedding as it is traditional for her parents to help her with the money.  In today’s society that may not be the case so the budget discussion needs to include both sets of parents and the groom.  Once that is determines, she is free to shop for her wedding dress and the jewellery she wishes to wear on her wedding day.  She also needs to book a hairdresser if she is not handling her own hair.

In addition to worrying about her own clothing, the bride needs to work with her bridesmaids to choose their dresses.  Then she needs to contact the florist for the wedding, the baker of the wedding cake, and any other professional that will be needed, such as a DJ or band, photographer or caterer.

Once the bride gets the groom’s half of the wedding invitation list, she can begin addressing and sending out the invitations and coordinating the seating arrangements for the reception.  Finally, she will need to arrange to have her name changed on all of her documentation, such as credit cards, insurance, and bank accounts.

The Groom

The groom is responsible for paying for the flowers and arranging the wedding attire for himself and his groomsmen.  He is the one that plans and pays for the honeymoon as well as pays the officiate and musicians for the wedding reception.  Typically, the groom is also responsible for sending out the invitations for the rehearsal dinner, however, that could be handled with the bride who is coordinating the mailing of the wedding invitations.  The groom handles the marriage license and is responsible for bringing it with him to the ceremony.
